Leroy Smith Public Safety Building
Once a high-rise county jail, the new Leroy Smith Public Safety Building has been stripped of its cells and infrastructure and renovated to be the home for ten New Jersey State Appellate Judges, their court and staff. As part of a large public building complex also designed by the firm, the diverse uses also include new offices for Homeland Security, County Prosecutors, County Utility Authorities and a County Sheriff Crisis Command Center. Expanses of exterior walls have been removed to provide floor to ceiling curtain wall glass daylighting and entire floors removed to allow for adequate headroom for new mechanicals and new technology raceways. The project also involved the creation of a new ‘green roof’ system with terraces, walkways and plazas.
