The Richard Codey Arena in West Orange, New Jersey is an addition and renovation project of a 100,000 square foot skating facility that consists of two ice hockey rinks, community rooms, and support space. Completed for Essex County and the Essex County Park System, the renovations involved the modernization of the original laminated arch-roof main arena and team rooms, and support spaces. The additions involved a new entrance pavilion, ticketing, concessions, retail spaces, rentals, children’s party rooms and arcade. The introduction of an atrium connector across the street façade of both rinks serves as both a program organizing element and a visual link between two structures that were of different architectural vocabularies constructed in different eras.
